The huge proliferation of cell phones over the past decade has created an all new and very lucrative industry centered on this important medium of communication. Everything from cell phone holders to hands free devices have been developed to enhance the experience of consumers the world over. One area that has also exploded in growth are ringtones: that little ringing song you hear when the cell phone rings. There is no limit to the number of available ringtones out there, with literally millions of different songs available for your downloading pleasure.
As cell phone grew in popularity, who would have thought that an industry selling ringtones would explode on the scene soon thereafter? While many ringtones are free, millions of others can be downloaded for a small charge as well. This latter category has proven to be extremely popular with many cell phone users who regularly download and change the tunes associated with incoming calls.
Ringtones come in basically three varieties including:
Monotone – The true vanilla of the three, monotone ringtones are as basic as they come. Similar to the ring you hear on your land based phone or the triple beep you hear with some cell phones.
Polyphonic – If it is many sounds that you are seeking, than a polyphonic ringtone can be a great choice. Although they are not actual audio files, the MIDI files powering these types of ringtones instruct your cell phone to play different sounds in order to produce a song.
MP3 – Your favorite song can be downloaded as an MP3 file and replayed as a ringtone with a MP3 audio file of the original recording. Virtually any song anywhere can be downloaded with a close replica to the original tune available to you.
Ringtones are considered to be a “fashion statement” by some as they basically tell everyone around you that you downloaded the latest hit tune. Knowing this, companies create cutting edge ringtones and offer these for sale to customers. At a couple of bucks a piece, the price isn’t very expensive but it can add up over time. Given the nature of humans, many people download a large amount of ringtones over the course of time. Thus, the lucrative side of the ringtone business becomes apparent to all.
Not every phone can play MP3 ringtones, but most currently produced cell phones will. So, if you have an older phone and you want the latest ringtones, then switching to one that can play today’s hits is likely important to you.
